The soundboard in this psaltery is made of Spalted Maple. The sensational look of
the wood and grain lines is produced by nature. Sometimes when a tree dies it
will decay and color into magnificent effects. These effects are caused by two
types of fungus. White Rot is a decay that will leave thin lines with lighter
colored areas between them. Blue Stain, unlike it's name, will leave colors
anywhere from yellow, red, orange, blacks or browns. These areas are found just
underneath the bark of the tree. Nature also provides each piece of Spalt a unique
and unexpected beauty of burels, lines and knots. The luthier can only control
how the Spalt will be displayed on the psaltery and nature does the rest, but your
psaltery will be a one of a kind beauty.
